Since I've reinstalled XP, I haven't been able to play DVDs

The problem seems to lie with the codex's.

The codex sites that Windows are pointing me to wards are paying sites. I've never payed for this before, Any ideas.

Have you also Enabled DVD in Tools>Options>File Types?

You will need a software or hardware decoder to be able to watch DVDs.

There's also Nero's ShowTime if you have installed and with the full set of utilities it provides.

The standard codecs pack (free) from click here will provide all the audio and video codecs you are likely to require.
