Windows Mail offers to compact messages?

Hi

Using Vista I now have Windows Mail which I find fine, much like OE6. However today I got the dreaded offer to compact messages. I dont want to do that as I read where it mightny be a good thing to do, something about finding it difficult to retrieve or backup messages later on.

Why is it asking me this? Is there anything I can do to prevent it?

Finally a general question; how do you backup messages in WM? In OE6 I had to go to store folder etc etc and save all the dbx files.

thanks

Compacting works OK for me.

The normal location of mail boxes is the hidden folder C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders then Inbox, Sent Items, etc. Individual mail items have an extension of .eml.

Before compacting, just copy the \Inbox (or \Sent Items), preferably to an offline location.
