Windows Keyboard Shortcuts (Ctrl + Shift + Arrows)

Am running Windows ME with a Saitek keyboard. Following a complete re-install of everything (thanks to a system crash), I find that the only thing not working is Ctrl + Shift + Arrow keys to highlight folders/files etc. to remove/copy on block. Have even tried just Shift + Arrow keys, but each time the cursor just runs along each file/folder without grouping them together and I end up at the end file/folder only. At present, the only way to remove/copy large amounts of files is to open the main folder and 'select all' from the 'File' menu.
I have looked at previous threads regarding this subject, but no help, and Microsoft knowledge base is a nightmare.
Anybody got any ideas?
