I cannot install any new software on my Vista Basic pc. This has not always been the case but as of today I get a error message which states- 'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.'

Also one other thing perhaps connected is that no software discs autorun/install.

Any thoughts?

This sometimes cures the problem :-
1. Start, type cmd in the search box and press Enter
2. Type msiexec /unregister (note the space) and press Enter
3. Type msiexec /regserver (note the space) and press Enter
4. Type exit and press Enter

And/or download the Windows Installer clean-up utility from here click here;en-us;290301

I forgot the 'autoplay' question :
Start, type regedit and press Enter. Navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and click on the folder called Cdrom.

In the right pane there will be a value called Autorun, right-click it and choose Modify and change the value to 1. To be safe, create a system restore point first.

Check the service is running and not been stopped;

Start and type

and enter.

Now scroll down to Window Management Instrumention.
This should be set to Automatic.
Also check the Windows Installer is set to Manual or Automatic.

And try;
Start and type CMD

Right click this and run as adminastrator.

Then type exactly this below; (note the space between c and /)

sfc /scannow

You must right click the cmd command prompt to give you elevated rights.

Let SFC run its course,you maybe asked for the Vista cd if the os is not preinstalled.
