Windows Installer Crashes PC

If I try to install software from cd that uses
windows installer it gets so far and then either gives error message "Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Data1.cab' required is corrupt and cannot be used", or the PC just reboots and performs the checkdisk. Have found that microsoft issued update to installer in May and that there have been problems, but I'm unable to revert to a previous version as windows won't allow it. Any ideas on solution would be much appreciated
