Windows has encountered a problem

Friend has a Dell Inspiron 5100. I recently replaced the 256 RAM with 1024 - bought from Crucial after a Crucial scan. Computer shows it recognises the new RAM. Friend reports laptop starting to crash with the dreaded blue screen and the 'windows has encountered a problem' message (last time was half way through writing an email). Windows XP Home. was OK for the first 4 days. Any suggestions please?

system restore should be to one of the four days when it was ok.

Last good configuration you have to start in safe mode[Just keep tapping F8 as the computer starts.]When it stops you will see last good configuration when on it just press enter an see if it makes any difference.Or maybe make sure the ram is seated properly.or put the old ram back in and try it with that.
