windows firewall / ftp problems

I have a problem with windows firewall which seems to be preventing access to ftp sites. I can access them O.K. if I disable the firewall but obviously it's

a bit of an inconvenience having to remember to switch it back on again. All the computers in the house (one PC and two laptops) are connected via a wireless

lan. Would it be safe to keep windows firewall turned off and rely on the inbuilt hardware firewall in the router? Or am I missing something here?

From checking my ZoneAlarm firewall logs, nothing gets through my router's firewall, but, for you, it will depend on how good yours is.

You could try installing something like the free version of ZoneAlarm (click here) and switching of the Windows Firewall and see if that helps. With ZoneAlarm you can tune the settings in ways that you cannot with Windows Firewall
