Windows Explorer closes then restarts

I have posted this problem before. Apologies for trying again.

I have a Vista (32 bit) PC.

Sometimes when I have closed down a folder and am back to my desktop, I get a message telling me that windows explorer is closing then it restarts. This only takes a few seconds but is annoying. Occasionally I see the hourglass appear before this happens.

I don't have a restore point to get back to as I had run out of disk space.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

Start orb/search box, type

eventvwr.msc

press return.

In Windows Logs (left hand list) select Application, look for red or yellow warnings timestamped at the same time as you experience(d) problems (you can use `Filter Current Log` on the right to narrow it to Errors, Warnings and/or Critical) Look for Explorer.exe with the Find tool.

Are there any, and are the error ID's the same?

I seem to get the application error (windows exploer when I look at the details) event id 1000 task category (100). This may be happening each time I get the problem.

But I also see lots of 3090 gatherer errors.

Any ideas?
thanks for your help

Error ID 1000 is a very common error and doesn't reveal much. Gatherer error seems to be related to search indexing.
Have you run full anti-virus and anti-spyware scans?
Does the PC still behave the same way in Safe mode ? Hit F8 repeatedly at start up before the Vista logo appears, choose Safe Mode (not safe mode with networking).

Thanks but have tried these scans and everything appears to be OK.

I have looked at some posts on the Windows Vista community and saw a suggestion to look at Problem Reports and Solutions in the control panel.

I found all the windows explorer faults listed and below is the detail given. Now I am really confused.

Any help you can give would be appreciated and many thanks for your help so far.

Thanks
Sara
