Windows does not recognise my "D" and "E" drives

  ianeon 13:15 15 Dec 03

I run windows XP Pro and Samsung cdrw/dvd sm-352B.
Windows does not recognise my D & E drives but my drives are listed in the bios/startup procedure.
I am advised by the computer manufacturer that this is a software problem and that I should re-install Windows XP - How do I do this? - Any help would be appreciated - thank you - Ian

Has this problem just occurred, or has it happened since installing something (hardware or software) ?

Before you even think about a format Type "diskmgmt.msc" without the quotes into run and hit enter. What's it display?

Check for the status of the drives in Device Manager. If necessary, you can uninstal them, re-boot and Windows should find them.

You may need to disconnect the drives as part of the process.

Re-installing XP is a bit drastic at this stage!

Top people, should have this cracked in a flash!

Thank you for the initial help - "diskmgmt.msc" just shows my C drive - Device manager says that the drives are O.K. - I did uninstall them and they came back. - I first noticed this problem after I installed my Soundblaster drivers

1. Open Command Prompt.

2. Type: diskpart

3. At the DISKPART prompt, type: Rescan

Check again..

I followed your instructions - with the same result - only my "C" drive was recognised

OK Go back to diskpart.

Type "List Volume" and hit enter

Your CDROM should be "0" then "1" and "2" this the case?

  ianeon 13:55 15 Dec 03

Again only "C" drive listed( as "0" )

Yeah sorry, C will be "0"

If XP is on C and your DVD is "D" whats "E"?
