Windows Defender won't start

My daughter runs Windows Defender under XP Home SP2.

Today when she started her computer, she received an error report as follows:

Application failed to initialise 0x800106ba: a problem caused Windows Defender service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help & Support on how to start the service manually.

I've searched Help & Support, and I've searched for the error code on Microsoft's knowledge base, but get no results.

Can anyone help solve this, please?

Happy New Year to all.

This is because the Beta Defender version ceased on 31/12/06.To solve the problem delete Defender that you have by going to Start, control panel, add remove programs & delete Defender. Then go on to the Microsoft website & download the latest version.

No you shouldn't. MS should have thought of people like us (I had the same problem earlier) and devised some sort of notification, with their esources it shouldn't be difficult
