When I go into my control; panel and click on add/remove I get the following message:

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1.Put the Windows XP CD ROM disk in the CD ROM drive.
2.Click Start, and then click Run.
3.Type expand X:\i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe in the Open box, where X is the letter of your CD ROM Drive.
4.Restart the computer.

forgot if that does not work you need to scan for virus's..
Wouldn't be a bad idea to do that anyway...

Mat Alan

I copied and pasted your suggestion, changing X: to D: and I get the message Windows cannot open this file:
File Rundll.exe_

XP came pre loaded but I have a CD telling me that the operating system is already installed on your system. Then states that it is a Re installation CD.

The CD also states that - This CD is not for re installation of programs or drivers...

I have (latest edition of) Norton anti virus and firewall. Did a virus check Sunday. Have had this problem for several weeks before that.

you need a full bootable version of XP you could borrow one to copy the file you need...

Do as MAT ALAN said and when asked for the Product Key, use your own.

Unfortunately, all of my friends (like me) are what you would call a silver surfer. We are all new to this, all have laptops that came with the operating system pre-installed so can't get a full copy of XP.

My copy of XP does not have a product key anyway.

Is there anything else I can do?
