Windows activations problems - log in issues.

I am having problems logging into my pc. when i get past the Windows welcome screen, a message appears saying

"This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now."

When i click "yes" it takes me to my desktop screen minus any of my desktop icons. Another screen appears saying Windows is already activated, click ok to exit. Once i have done that it takes me back to the welcome screen and back to above Windows activation message! so basically i'm going around in circles!!

I've had this pc for over 2 years and had no issues like this before.

I wonder if anyone has had issues like this before. Any advice would be great.

Many Thanks

1. Restart in Safe Mode (F8)
2. Go to /System/32/ and delete wgatray.exe & Go to /dllcache/ if it exists and delete the same .exe If not don't worry about the second.
3. Go to Start => Run => regedit
5. Delete WgaLogon folder
6. Reboot.

Windows Product Activation (wpa) database file

Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\
do a search for wpa.dbl
rightclick on wpa.dbl and click on properties and make sure it is NOT read only

I've just tried your suggestions

Jock1e: if i click "no" it takes me back to the welcome screen. It does seem to open up in safe mode no problem.

MAT ALAN: I searched for wgatray.exe in the system 32 folder and it does not exist and dllcache does not exist either. Also the WgaLogon folder does not exist either.

lotvic: i did the search for wpa.dbl and it is not read only.

When i enter in safe mode, does it matter if i log in as "administrator" or the normal "owner" icon?

Thanks for your patience!
