Windows 98SE - shut down

For some reason my computer wont shut down - it gets as far as "windows is shutting down" and then hangs. This has only happened for the last few days so I don't think I have done anything to cause this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to all in advance.

Try scan disc in safe mode &system file checker.

There is a Windows 98SE shutdown patch that, hopefully, will cure what is a common problem:

It would also be a good idea to install - if you haven't already - the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack (it's Unofficial because it's not been released by Micrsoft), which is a collection of all the 98SE updates etc:
