Windows 98 shutting down after startup

My friend's Win 98 machine ( unfortunately I don't know which version or anything else about the specs of the pc because we only had a quick chat ) keeps shutting down shortly after Windows has got to desktop with the error message "A fatal error has occurred windows will now shut down" and then it doesn't, it just hangs with a black screen and this message. I know this is all a bit vague at the moment, but I'll post more details once I've spoken to her more. She has a virus scanner but I've no idea if she has kept it up to date.

Any ideas what's up?

Has she tried starting in safe mode?

She hasn't as far as I know but it sounds like a good place to start, it runs through the bios at startup so I'll ask her to try it and see what we can do from there, thanks
