hi, my nephew has phoned me with a problem. He says that his computer has started playing up and that he can't access messenger or his avg anti-virus (message pops up saying he is lacking some file). He has zone alarm installed but he thinks that has disappeared too. He can still connect to the internet (he has broadband)but is receiving numerous error messages. Any ideas where to start in order to clean up this mess? thanks for any advice...

or can try scanreg/restore and pick a good boot date to revert back to.

Yes I did not give that one as He may not have a good restore point Registry. As windows deletes any older than five points

Sounds to me like a bad malware infestation.

Since he can get online I suggest he runs the freebie from Trendmicro "Housecall" which will scan for bad stuff online. click here

If it does find much to fix, it may not be enough in itself, but might see most of the errors disappear and give encouragement to start in earnest!
