Windows 98 Media Player not Working

Someone installed Windows 98 (second edition) on an old PC which previously used 95.

After downloading an installing display and audio drivers the media player would not play any sound files. Audio CDs would play on the D: drive and after checking the new audio driver by going into Control Panel/System/Device Manager - the message was that the device was working OK.

I did however receive a message, before attempting to play a sound file on the media player, saying something to the effect that the device would not play because the setting were altered. The message never appeared again.

Are there any files which I could either download from the Web or copy from the Windows 98 disc that would solve the problem?

You probably need to update the codecs, download this codec pack, it will have all you need.
