Windows 98 cannot resume from standby

Please can you help? I have a pc running windows 98. It will go into standy from time to time and I cannot resumre normal operation. The on off switch fails to respond to my attempts at turning it off and I have to unplug it from the mains in order to turn off the pc. I have altered the power management settings so that it should remain on at all times but this doesn't seem to make any difference.

All advice gratefully received,

i know its not an answer as such but, if you need to force the pc to shutdown, press and hold the power button for 4or5 seconds. it should turn off and you can then power up once more.

You can alter these settings in the 'Power Management'

Also in the bios there should be some settings to allow the button settings to be altered ie: soft off / no standby etc.
