Windows 7 Updates

I have recently bought a laptop with Windows 7 on it. Every time I switch the pc off it tells me there are 49 (or on 1 occasion 50) updates and this can take up to 1/2 hour to update and switch off. I sought advice from my nephew who understands computers more than me and he suggested clicking start - typing in windows update - and then "updating now". There were 50 updates when I did this last night so I did the updating (another 1/2 hour plus), restarted computer and carried on with what I wanted to do. I had hoped this had solved the problem, however it hasn't as the same message about 49 updates appeared when I went to switch off. Any suggestions or help welcome please.

Go to Control Panel and have a look in 'Uninstall a Program' (I think that's what it's called in Win 7).

Are any of those 49 updates listed in there?

Thank you for all the suggestions. It seems to be sorted out now.
