windows 7 network probs

I purchased and installed windows 7 and since then I cannot link my PC to laptop through my wireless network. The icon on PC shows full strength but with a red X next to it. If I totally unisnstall windows 7 ( format ), will that delete ALL network settings and allow me to set up a fresh connection as apparently its the password I cannot remember?
I know this may seem a hard way of doing it but Im not that good when it comes to networking and may be the easiest option if a full format is done? Any help or suggestions please........
