Windows 2000 Pressional Shutdown Problem

My computer has recently ceased to shutdown properly. It goes through the Win2k Professional shutdown routine but after displaying "Windows is shutting down" the dialogue box disappears leaving the blue default Windows background rather than closing down. Does anyone know why this is happening and/or, more importantly, how to fix the problem.
