Window XP home edition, Safe mode

This sounds very elementary, perhaps, but how do you start in safe mode?
When I try to follow the instructions I get stuck on the first hurdle; on my computer it says 'Turn off' and when you click the button it just shuts down. When I press the 'restart button' the computer restarts. There is no message of any sort after clicking OK.
Help please!!

Restart then keep tapping the F8 key just before the Windows screen appears. Then select Safe Mode from the menu that should appear.

Thank you VoG for your prompt reply. I am going to try it now. (I wonder why do they write such a long list of instructions when the Safe Mode is so easily obtainable.)
