WINDOW TASK MANAGER PROCESSES

When I start up my computer it is very slow. After checking the Task Manager, there are 56 processes open / running, (even when I'm not doing or running anything). How do I know which processes I need and which ones I don't. I have a limited knowledge of computers let alone what all of these processes (under the Image Name heading) are for. If it's any use, the CPU Usage is 2-4% when nothing is running. Would this speed up my computer if I could stop some of these ??
Cheers

Go to Start; Run and type msconfig and hit OK.

In the startup tab you can de-selsct superfluous programs which automatically run in the background.
