win98 problem

a friend of mine is having troble with win 98, when she starts it up she gets a black screen with the option of normal,safe mode,and other options, when she selects an option nothing happens, any idea's please.

when she selects an option does she also press 'enter'?

and what has happened to the comp to have this happening; can you provide any more information ?

1. Start your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu.
If you cannot get into command prompt then use a windows 98 boot disk (click here) and boot with that to command prompt.

2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER. Where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.

3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.
4. Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER.NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.

5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.

Yes get that list again and choose Command Prompt, then type Just as you see it including the space before /


and press enter choose a old date that it worked
