Win XP starts ok but then re-boots for user

My daughter's p/c is having problems. It starts OK and gets to the select a user screen but on selecting a user (any one of the 4) it re-boots.

The p/c is win xp with sp2. She found a trojen yesterday and this was deleted (using AVG) but I suspect that the one of the starting files has been corrupted, damaged or deleted. But which one?

I have used her Win XP disc in recovery mode and carried out the fixboot and fixmbr options but that has not solved the problem. Is there another recovery option that I should be running?
