win xp pro lost system restore

my winxp pro system has suddenly lost the use of system restore, every time i try and access it i get this error ( system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restart your computer and then run system restore again) i have tried all this but to no avail and i cannot get in to system restore to turn it on, has any body any ideas, thanks

1. Open Control Panel and open Folder Option.

2. Click the View tab and check the "Show hidden files and folders" box.

3. Open My Computer to locate the following folder.
C:\windows\INF (INF is a hidden Folder)

4. Right click on SR.INF and Select install

5. After the install is finished, reboot and try again. If that fails then click here and see if the Dell boys know their stuff

As above but to make it easier just type C:\windows\INF into run and hit enter...
