as the subjest field suggests I am running XP Pro and system defrag gets to 2 bars on the progress bar and seems to freeze. I have checked that no other programs or screensavers are running but cannot get it to complete. any suggestions?

do you have sufficent free space to allow defrag

Try this click here

Yes the disk is only a quarter full

Didn't really want to run any third party software, but wanted to find out why the Windows defrag wont run.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you do, wobbler.

Otherwise defrag in Safe Mode click here with screensaver turned off.

Try checking your HD for errors, start menu/run type `chkdsk`

Any pertinent entries in the event viewer?
Right click My Computer, select Manage, select Event Viewer, look through System and Application logs for anything relating to defrag.
Startmenu/run,type `eventvwr.msc` is an alternative way to access it.
