We have two computers xp + xp pro and have had no problems regarding security.

A friend who is thinking of up dating to xp has a book which states that Microsoft can access/hack your files via the registry. Is this the case?

The question needs to be asked why would Microsoft want to do that? They would probably die of boredom reading most peoples files anyway.

I don't think microsoft would risk hacking a humble end users machine. That and it's illegal. hacking that is.

Put it this way, when you go to Windows Update, the Product Key in your registry is checked to see if you are using a pirate copy or a blacklisted key, so in that respect Microsoft can and does directly access your PC's registry.

yes, tha's true, but they still don't check your registry in the context that lap implies.

why bother?
