Win XP clean install problems

As a favour for a mate of mine I said I would upgrade his PC to XP. He backed up all his data and everything he needed from his hard drive, so I formatted, and installed Win XP Pro for him. It seemed to load fine with no error messages while installing, however, on his PC when I go into windows explorer it fails to recognise his DVD-Rom drive is there, it won't read from it or anything, yet it installed XP from it fine, so it must all be connected properly. Have any of you guys got any ideas as to what I could do to try and make XP recognise his DVD drive? Without it his PC is pretty useless.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
