Win 2k gone loopy

I've just installed a very early copy of Win 2k (no service packs) on a newly built machine with the idea of using it as an archive for documents and pictures. The install went ok and it was working fine till I decided to review bios settings before installing applications. I can't recall doing anything silly during the bios check so maybe there is another explanation but afterwards I can't launch win 2k. It goes through the POST process, the coloured windows welcome screen appears while a progress strip travels left to right. The next screen I see is the Bios going through the POST again. The machine would loop like this for ever if I let it. It keeps going half way through logon and then starting all over again. I'd be grateful for any ideas.

you can load default setting of bios

Sorry for the clumsy double posting. Getting paranoid and thought this machine was on the blink too.

Thanks for the thought TomJerry. I've tried both the automatic bios settings, failsafe and optimum.
Does not make any difference so even though the problerm appeared just after I had been working in the bios I don't think it is a bios problem.
