Trying to repair a laptop with message appearing on startup ' windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\winnt\system32\config\systemced startup options for windows 2000, press F8'

found two articles on microsoft website but all solutions need the win 2000 cd which I do not have. Any ideas how to mend????

If you are getting desperate, boot with something which gives you access to the system partition via DOS Prompt. Beware, if you have NTFS as I did your choice is limited; otherwise, any DOS, Linux LiveCD,really, anything will work. Then copy these files: WINDOWSDIR/Repair/* over your damaged hive files: WINDOWSDIR/System32/config. This should put you back to an old but working situations. How many software you will recover it’s difficult to know - check the date of those files creation.

Where it says this on point 4 which i think is my only option, what cd could I use to get to msdos, could i use my xp cd?

Interesting point,
Not sure if you booted from XP CD into recovery consul you could then be able to read the drive and copy the file (probably from the i386 folder) to c:\windows\system32\config
