fdisk and format carried out, re installed win 98se ok but get so far with win 2000 and it crashes. disc is a w2k upgrade. I've tried upgrading win 98, doing a clean install on win 98
and using the four floppies, a direct install into a freshly formatted partition. on each occasion get as far as 'installing devices' and halfway along the time bar computer crashes. Have searched and am still searching for any help, but if anyone here as any suggestions I'll be grateful.

What is your system? (Hardware)

I can't help with your query but have given up trying to install Win2k on my system as it runs for 1-2days and crashes and won't return to last configuration.
I have my suspicion that it's either the packard Bell diamond 1200 scanner drivers or the creative sound card.

Will follow responses with interest.

Is the pc and hardware Windows 2000 compliant? Prior to installing Windows
2000, it's a good idea to check the HCL found at
then check the pc, mb, or bios manufacturer's web site for an updated bios
(if required) The pc or hardware manufacturer's web site may also have the
latest Windows 2000 drivers you require for your hardware.

If you still have trouble, you might try removing all non-essential
hardware, get through the install, then ADD the hardware back in
one-at-a-time.

Upgrades mostly don't work out well for a couple of reasons. The Win9x
install may have already had some hidden or other corruption that just
transferred to the Windows 2000 install. Some of the Win9x applications may
be also causing problems due to incompatibility or the need for a patch or
upgrade typically anti-virus software fits in this category.

Best to do a clean install. During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will
want to confirm the previous operating system for the upgrade; at that point
you'll simply insert the qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then
the install will proceed.

To do a clean install, either boot the CD-Rom or boot the Windows 2000 setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

thanks to both Octoz and spikeychris for the replies. Problem not resolved but because of win 98 running ok I can search for clues on the net. I'll tick it as resolved.
