Will a US iPhone work in the UK?

I'm told it's cheaper to buy an iphone in the US to use here in the UK. Will it work here? Presumably I need an unlocked sim-free iphone?

With the exchange rate as it is at present it's doubtful that it would work out cheaper.

Hi all, thx for the replies. My question was really oriented around whether a US-purchased iPhone will work in the UK. Would I have to sign-up to O2 or, if it's unlocked, then can I use any pay as you go tariff (I'm a bit naive about this)? What works out cheaper? I've seen unlocked (= "sim free"?) iPhones going for £600+ over here, they must be cheaper than c$900 in the US?
