How do I connect to the internet with my laptop without a router

You can connect to wi-fi hotspots (at great expense).

Other than that, you'll need a modem.

At home the best way, if your laptop is wireless enabled, is to connect a wireless modem/router to any convenient telephone socket. The socket must have a filter fitted before the connections to any phone and/or modem/router. You should then be able to connected wirelessly to your laptop anywhere else in the house after configuring your router and laptop. Instructions for this come with the modem/router.
