Hi I have a problem with shut down with XP Home. When I close down it hangs for between 15-30 seconds before it shuts down. How can I find out why.

Thanks Al

Check what progs are running ie Anti virus, firewalls etc. Remember that when you close win. though you do not see it, it has to close all progs before switching off.

My Win XP was taking about 30 seconds to shut down and I know that it was due to a USB modem causing it to hang. By default, XP allows this time for running applications to shut down normally before it kills them.

A registry 'tweak' reduces this time and I now shut down in 5 seconds.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

Change the "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" setting to 200 (default setting is 20000).
