Widescreen TV as monitor - resolution problems

  ArcAngel67 10:54 18 Oct 08

Putting XP through 36in widescreen plasma TV. Had no real problems except pics are all stretched. I have changed display setting from 'stretch' to 'centre' and screen resolution is set at 1024x768, which apart from being a bit stretched fills the screen OK. Any suggestions on how to improve pic appearance?

You probably need to check that your graphics card or onboard graphics can support the widescreen settings.

If you right click on an empty section of the Desktop>Properties>Settings tab>Advanced button>Adapter tab>List All Modes button, you can check if WXGA resolutions are available (see click here for the actual resolutions).

Even my humble ATi Radeon 9550 supports such resolutions and, as it supports dual monitor use, I would anticipate it could be configured to feed a TV as a monitor - hopefully you could do the same.

Your 1024x768 resolution was the setting I used for many years for a 17in iiyama CRT monitor; obviously it had the standard 4:3 aspect ratio.

The resolution should be set as per the maximum shown for the Screen. I have a 22" Widescreen DTV/Monitor with a resolution of 1680x1050/Stretch. Your resolution looks far to small.

My graphics card is a humble Nvidia 6600.

Hi thanks for your replies, it's a Panasonic Viera 36".

I have gone to the resolutions on the graphics card and it will take a higher spec but I think I will have to play with it to find the best resolution, the 1280x800 is great for the width, but I lose the bottom of the screen.

Your card is highly sophisticated compared to mine..:-(

Yet my now ancient 9550 is capable of bettering your card's top resolution's refresh rate of 2048 x 1536/60 Hz with a figure of 85Hz...:-)

Graphics Card is Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE

Try 1366x768 and then 1920 x 1080 resolution settings to see if these work (they are listed amongst various Panasonic TV HD resolutions); you may also need to change the aspect ratio (to 16:9?)

1360x768 (can't get 1366x768 isn't too bad, but I lose the left of the screen and I can't see 1920x1080 at all. I am already using 16:9, but have found a very easy solution, if I want to view my pic I just adjust the TV resolution to 4:3 at the touch of a button. For my desktop pic I use downloaded widescreen pics so they are seen correctly.

Thanks for all your replies.
