wi-fi finders are they worth having?

Seems you can buy little gizmos for finding wi-fi hot spots without booting up your laptop.

Are they worth it if the hotspot are not free or you cannot access them? As every other house is going wireless (which are usually secure) there might be a confusion of hot spots but no access. Seems potential for disappointment.

Anyone got any experience or advice?
