Why won't Windows XP shut down?

  AJ59 14:16 07 Apr 03

Recently, when shutting Windows down my system freezes at the last "Windows is shutting down " screen and I have to switch off at the mains. When restarting there is no reference to your system was not shut down properly etc, just back in as normal. Any suggestions as obviously not right?
