Why does Windows take a lot longer to boot after performing a disk check ?

I am referring to the Windows disk check as shown in my screenshot (below):

On Vista it takes over 3 times as long to boot up !

I can't remember if it took that long on Windows XP - I no longer have a Windows XP installation.

I don't know about Windows 7 as I have that OS is installed on a SSD and as that loads almost instantly, it's difficult to tell.
