Why does MY COMPUTER keep opening at startup ?

  Paul33 08:35 23 Oct 10

Had this one for six months or so - doesn't appear to do any harm but still annoying !

I've checked the STARTUP items and nothing seems unusual or referencing My Computer in any way. I've cleaned and de-fragged the registry, I've checked the Registry entry for userinit is correct, I'ce checked for viruses and spyware ..... and still it pops up every time !

Any ideas ?

1. Open Start menu >> Run or press window + r , this will open the run prompt

2. Type “regedit” ( without quotes ) and press Enter , this will open registry editor

3. Now, navigate to the following registry key in registry editor

HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

4. Double click the Userinit registry key and set the value C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, ( The comma at the end of the value should also be there ).

5. Exit registry and restart your computer to see the change into effect

The comma is definitely there - checked it several times now !

Have you rebooted the machine?

Why would I reboot the machine ..... I haven't changed anything !!!

Change the registry setting (even though it doesn't appear to need changing) close regedit and reboot

see if it has cured the problem.
