Why do some programs disappear or lose bits?

In another post I was discussing difficulty in getting a microphone to work.
I discovered ultimately, the supplied software had disappeared and needed to be re installed, having done so- at next boot up it had gone again.

Strangely this being a boom mic on a USB headphone- The phones work fine all the time

Likewise my favourite image editor, Paint Shop Pro
will after a time lose some functionality, and I will have to set a repair mode or even as of just now a total reinstall the third time in as many weeks.

Why is this?

Virus / malware or a dying HDD.

Thank you for the suggestions FB
But
No detected nasties at moment.
The HDD is New[ish] No criterion I know, but the events mentioned have been happening over time with the older hard drive too.
It has been a feature with Paint Shop over all the years I have been using it- after a while it will go Blah! and a reset is needed or Blah Blah! and a repair or even a reinstall.
