White and mauve screen on startup

Hello all. I use an Acer 4920 laptop running Windows Vista (oh, the pain!)

Last week the computer got a serious knock and ever since it has shown a whitish screen with mauve/purple water-like splodges on startup. After a minute it boots as normal and these disappear. I have also had one crash where the screen has gone to white and mauve, with the mauve part growing and moving up the screen.

Can anyone tell me what this is likely to be so I can figure out if I need to get something repaired/replaced.

I have searched for this topic and found nothing so apologies if this is brain-achingly obvious to everyone but me.

Many, many thanks in advance for your help.

I would suspect either something like a connector has become displaced, or that one of the PCB's is physically damaged (hairline crack). Electronic components as such will not be damaged by severe shock... it's the boards they are soldered to that break. The HDD is vulnerable but that seems to have escaped OK.
The screen is another part that is vulnerable... hard to say without seeing the fault.
