I have tried various methods as given in magazines help pages but floppy still whirrs when booting up and closing down; and has now started whilst I am using other windows programs.
I have XP system with SP2. Did try changing boot search but wasn't really sure what to do.

Thanks

Put a Blank disc in the drive.
Its like some babies - its gotta have something to suck.

I changed the boot sequence in BIOS to just cd rom and hard disk, left the third option blank.

Out of curiousity do you have Norton Internet Security or similar?

Yes I do have Norton Internet Security 2005; is this a problem?

Norton tries to read the floppy drive on starting and closing - that way if you've accidentally left an infected floppy in the drive, it's scanned so that you don't boot from it and infect the hard drive.

can't remember it exactly, but right click the little yellow norton symbol, go to options. You can disable it in their.
