Which software to assemble a show?

Just thinking..?.?... about assembling a show show for digital projection.
Ignore the hardware please - I'll worry about that later!
I have the material, most of it old photos and maps, none animated, but already in electronic form. Sound is not essential, the purpose is visual aid to a talk.

Where I would value help is with the software. No experience at all.
Is there some sweet software I could download (preferably inexpensive) but reliable and easy for someone not a quick learner any more?

My first Windows capable machine (386 SX) was marketed by CompuAdd (long since over the hill) and I was offered the alternative of Power Point or Word v.2. No contest!
That's the nearest I came unless it's hiding on Office 97 or Office 2000 Pro, but I don't think so.

To all, that is a splendid start - thank you. I'll let the thread run a while yet

will certainly be hiding in Office 2000 Pro.

FE you are correct!
I hadn't looked properly.

(I think CorelDraw used to have Corel Show, but my present version has Corel R.A.V.E. which is just a way of animating vector drawings and not what I need.)

Have installed P.P. and will play later. For now I have plenty to look at.
Thanks everyone.
