Which router shall I buy as Netgear DG832 failed?

I have no broadband and think it is down to the router (took it around to my Dad's, changed the settings and still couldn't connect).
So what shall I get this time? The PC is old (ethernet connection) and the laptop has a 54mbps internal card but I do have a Netgear brand new 108 mbps external card.
The router always got very hot and my daughter has knocked it off the table several times.
I really want to get a new router as of 10 mins ago as I need my internet "fix"!
I can get to a PCWorld , Argos etc (would usually use Amazon and online companies but am desperate to restore my connection).
i don't want anything that is too complicated to set up.

Linkysys are pretty good, says my mate.

I've never used one, but my mate's broadband is always on and hasn't gone down for a year, at least.

I am using a Thomson Speedtouch ST585. Couldn't be easier to install and works perfecly!
