Which programs to leave when loading software

On my trusty old Win98SE based machine I close everything except for systray and explorer when I need to install software.

I now have a super new notebook running Win XP Professional. What programs/services should I leave running with this version please?

Many thanks

Fruity

If you really want to know about services go here.

But i would leave it all alone.

Xp is a more complex o/s than 98 and all the processes you see running in the task manager are there for a reason. (ctrl - alt - del) then processes.

Is it unusual to have over twenty of them running? On Windows ME it was only about six without my AV.
