buying a new computer - which is the best processor??

I have a choice of two, the AMD ATHLON 64 X2 5000+ (3.2ghz) dual core or the Intel core 2 quad Q6600 quad core (2.4ghz)

Basically i haven't much experience with the latest gen of CPU so dont really understand how they work.

Is the processor speed for each core?? i.e. would the quad core be 2.4ghz x 4 (9.6ghz) or is it just 4 cores making a total of 2.4 ghz??

The PC will mainly be used for online and music, maybe a bit of gaming but nothing major.

Cheers

Go for the AMD for what you need it for.

Then i would go for the Intel hands down and it will run cooler.

Each core will work upto 2.4GHZ when the machine is stressed.Basically the cores will step in if you have mutiple programs working away.
The computer will not run at 9.6GHZ

Not many applications make use of quad core as yet but will in the future. Like skidzy I would go for the Intel. I have a Q6600 and it is fine and have just ordered another system with a Q6600 for my son.
