Which IP addresses to use

I am using XP hone with a broadband connection. I have a acquired another system using 98SE and I would like to play around with networking and ICS. If I create a 2-user network with crossover cable I set the IP addresses to reflect this situation, but I want both computers to share the internet connections with ICS. The IP address is assigned automatically from ISP so how do I configure the client system to recognise a variable IP address. Its clear me hope it is to you.
