i have bought two additional external hard drives for my windows xp. but it record stuff gobbledegook and then asks me what programme to open it in.
i don't understand this as th data is on loads of different programmes. so I've had to take them back.

i have wonderful Maxtor one touch 4, which is full up. and no problems. what can i buy which will just do the job without downloading patches or other stuff i don't really understand.

the new ones were huge bite size drives. any advice please. linda

Any of the major brands of external hard drives, Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor, Samsung etc. should work OK. They are 'plug and play', so should just connect to your PC via the USB port and work without any further intervention from you.

The Problem is that they have pre-Loaded Backup Software on the Drive, if you do not need it, Just Delete it off the drive in Windows Explorer and Remove the Software from Add Remove. It will most likely also be in MSCONFIG start-up list
