A basic question; please can someone tell me how to find out if I have got W 98 second edition?

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the box, type winver, and then click OK.

In Windows Explorer go to Help>About. This will tell you.

Also when you boot up the splashscreen (Welcome Screen) should tell you. Unless it says Windows SE it probably isn`t. Some welcome screens say Windows PLUS. Don`t get your hopes up. This is probably the first edition but with the PLUS media package added.

Running Winver only tells me I have Win 98 but if I right click MY COMPUTER/ then Properties it says Win 98 SE on the General tab so maybe that could be the better way to tell??

Or you could download Belarc Advisor free from click here

This will audit your PC and tell you almost everything you need to know about it.

VER at the DOS Prompt will give Windows 98 [Version 4.10.2222] if you are running Windows 98 Second Edition.
