I have a new aser aspire laptop as well as a couple of older Desk top PCs Which DVD format should I choose or are modern PCs able to cope with both. I want to save video and files to them.

Really depends on the older machines, some drives can be choosy about the disk used so always use good quality like Plextor most players in the last 8 years will use either + or - disks

If you are thinkiing of playing them on a dvd player then stick with-R quality I'd go for Verbatim
